About us

Brain Injury Otago is here to support you through this journey.

At Brain Injury Otago we understand that a brain injury affects not only the injured person but the whole family – from financial challenges, to social upheaval, isolation and job loss. It creates stress and pressure on those with the injury and their loved ones. Brain Injury Otago is the only community based organisation who is independent, available and keen to support individuals and families.

Brain Injury Otago lives by its ethos - Listen. Support. Educate.

  • A non judgmental listening ear - Listening to the needs, troubles and concerns of those affected by brain injury and their larger support network.

  • Assisting those affected by brain injury to access help, services and activities to enhance their well being at all stages of their journey.

  • Educating communities to be proactive in embracing and assisting those affected by brain injury.

Brain Injury Otago is a free service available to everyone.

Brain Injury Otago promotes an understanding of all aspects of brain injury, focusing not just on the impact on the individual but also on their families and others who care for them. Experience has shown education is the key to managing many of the issues that arise.

  • Our Liaison Officers highlight and facilitate access to support, services and activities that are available to those affected by brain injury.

  • Individual support around accessing services and support.

    • i.e. ACC, Work and Income, and other government organisations or community agencies. Our clients find it extremely helpful to have someone who is knowledgeable on entitlements and the systems they have to deal with, who is able to speak up on their behalf if required.

  • Our Liaison Service is based in Community House in Dunedin where we have a library of relevant books for clients to borrow along with other pamphlets, factsheets and information.

  • Information and education to understand and manage the effects of the injury, support groups to encourage confidence, avoid isolation and reintegrate back into the community in a comfortable and supportive environment.

  • Free confidential, personal advice, all questions whatever they maybe are important and need answering. Having someone to help navigate the various systems you have to deal with helps.
